Research internships

Research internships

The students work on a defined research project under an individual supervision of an advanced researcher. After the project is finished the students write a scientific project report. It is an opportunity to gather insight into current theoretical and practical research.

In the BSc Biology program, a maximum of 12 ECTS in "Wahlpflichtgruppe 2" can be obtained from one or two research internships (Forschungspraktika). In the MSc Biology program (any concentration), research internships are not possible.

Research internships are considered internal when they are supervised by a research group leader associated with the Faculty of Science (MNF), who is involved in teaching in the BSc Biology and also supervising PhD students or Master’s projects of the MNF, and external otherwise.

Paid activities such as an assistant job or a practical course temporary employment will not be accredited with credit points.

Arranging a Research Internship

Research internships cannot be booked. Students should arrange an internship with a research group leader (supervisor) and the person in charge of the module. Once a student has completed the internship, the supervisor will notify the academic support office in writing of the grade achieved and the number of credits to be awarded. For external research internships please see internships.

Research internships (internal, external, abroad)

Internal

Students should arrange internal research internships directly with a research group leader. If you are not sure whether your chosen supervisor qualifies as internal, ask the academic support office (studienkoordination@biol.uzh.ch). One ECTS credit for each fulltime week (duration of an internal research internship 4-12 weeks) is awarded.

External External research internships must be approved in advance by both the person in charge of the module, and by the academic support office (studienkoordination@biol.uzh.ch). A maximum of  6 ECTS will be accredited, even if the duration is longer than 6 weeks. Further important information can be found on the information sheet.
