The advanced studies curriculum follows the basic studies curriculum. In the advanced studies curriculum, students are able to choose their preferred topics within biology from a large number of modules. Students can take modules of the advanced studies curriculum during either their Bachelor's or their Master's degree course. Block courses and special lectures are key components of the advanced studies curriculum.
These are defined as core elective modules ("Wahlpflichtmodule") and are offered by the Department of Biology at the University of Zurich and the ETHZ with fully compatible timetabling. To be admitted to a block course, students must have successfully completed all the compulsory modules of the basic studies curriculum.
The required amount of core elective modules "Wahlpflichtgruppe 2" and "Wahlpflichtgruppe 3" in the Advanced Studies BSc Biology depends on the chosen study program size (BSc 120, 150 or 180 ECTS). Note that all numbers specify the minimum amount of credits to be completed from each category. Doing some more credits is always allowed, up to 10 additional ECTS credits can be counted towards the degree.
