Booking deadlines and Modules

Modules and courses UZH

Research internships, iGEM, the museum internship and the curatorial internship at the Zoo are counted in "Wahlpflichtgruppe 2", but only in the Bachelor study programs.

Booking deadlines of modules

The module booking takes place online via the booking tool of the University of Zurich except of the block courses which have to be booked via a separate online booking tool.

The booking deadlines, as well as the cancellation period are listed in the course catalogue of the University of Zurich (VVZ) for each course under "Organization". In order to access the module booking page you need an UniAccess-ID and password which you will receive after the payment of the semester fees.

In module booking, a distinction is made between booking modules, inquiry modules, and application modules. Most biology modules are either booking modules (lectures, without limited capacity) or not directly bookable (e.g., all block courses, registration via the Biology Block Course Tool). Inquiry or application modules (with limited places) are identified as such in the "Wegleitung", and the current course catalog is decisive in each case.

At the date mentioned in the tool, you will find the final allocation of your block courses in the block course booking tool (you will receive no notification!).

Absence or block course cancellation:
Detailed information

Biology-block courses ETHZ Closing date for registration is the end of the second week of the lecture period.

Further information

Students, who have reserved ETHZ biology block courses via the common UZH/ETHZ system, have to register themselves at the ETHZ too and to book the respective courses online. The ETHZ registration is free for UZH students.
Further modules UZH For detailed information consult the VVZ select the  course of interest and check the information under "Organization". Module booking tool UZH
Forschungspraktika / Research Internships Research Internships cannot be booked.

Internal Research Internships have to be agreed by a Research leader as well as by the module leader of the specific Research Internship.

More information

ETHZ learning units   If you like to book learning units at ETHZ then you have to register as "Fachstudierende" (http://www.mystudies.ethz.ch). The registration is valuable for one semester at a time and free of charge. Afterwards, you will receive the access data for the ETHZ-System and will be able to book learning units and to register for the exam.

Booking of UZH modules by ETHZ students or other SWISS Universities.

Application deadline

Students of the ETHZ, who book modules of the curriculum in biology have to register at the latest on Friday prior semester start for a "hochschulübergreifendes Studium". Students from other SWISS Universities have to register earlier (31 July for the fall semester and 31 January for the spring semester)

Mobility within Switzerland – Incoming: Information

Very important information on block courses UZH

General information The biology block courses focus on a research based teaching and learning in small groups. The complex organisation and preparation of these courses asks for special rules in order to ensure a fair allocation of the restricted study places. The attendance and active participation in the allocated biology block courses of the University of Zurich is compulsory. A swap or change of the courses after the allocation is not possible due to the scheduling and organisation. Therefore, the attendance of the allocated courses is the prerequisite of assessing the acacemic achievement. Furthermore, non-attendance of several days is not possible.
Application for block courses
The application period of the block courses starts at the end of July for the fall semester and at the middle of December for the spring semester. The application window is two weeks. One week prior semester start the students can check their final course allocation via the block course application. There will be no automated messaging!

Block course application and allocation for the fall semester 2023:

Application deadline: 22.07.2024 - 09.08.2024 block course application

The final allocation is available from 04.09.2024 under "Allocation"  block course allocation

Booking other courses Booking of all the other lectures, courses and modules via the  booking tool.
Cancelation of  block courses Cancellation is only possible from unavoidable reasons (e.g. illness). If you are unable to participate in a course for which you have been assigned a place, it is highly important that you inform the module coordinator of the respective course  immediately. Otherwise, the course will be registered as failed in your academic record.
Block course assignment To be admitted to a block course, students must have successfully completed all the compulsory modules of the basic studies curriculum. For certain courses there are specific requirements requested which are specified in the course catalogue of the University of Zurich. Please always check if you fulfill all requirements prior to your registration. If you miss prerequisites for an already allocated course and for this reason are not allowed to participate in the course, the course is listed as "failed" in your transcript. The module coordinator of a Block course (UZH) in accordance with the Academic support office is responsible for the allocation of the students. There is no guarantee to be assigned to a block course. Priority is given to Master’s students who have the course listed in their signed learning agreement, and to Bachelor students who have not yet completed the necessary number of courses for their Bachelor's degree. Further, applicants are prioritized according to achievement in the basic studies curriculum modules and completion of other academic work and modules to specifically qualify for the course. Students who presumably will have completed the basic studies curriculum prior to course start will be assigned a place dependent on availabilities. On overbooked courses of the UZH, students from the ETHZ will be granted 10% of the available places. The same arrangement applies vice versa for ETHZ courses.
