Booking deadlines and Modules

Booking deadlines of modules

Module registration is carried out online via the University’s student portal. Access to the student portal requires your UZH login credentials (ID and password), which can be found in the applicant portal a few days after payment of the semester fees.

When registering for modules, a distinction is made between booking modules (Buchungsmodulen), request modules (Anfragemodulen), and application modules (Bewerbungsmodulen). Most biology modules are either booking modules (lectures with no enrollment limit) or are not directly bookable (e.g. all block courses, which require registration via the Biology block course tool).

The registration deadlines for each module are listed in the course catalogue (Autumn Semester from mid-August, Spring Semester from mid-January).

What Booking Description
"Grundstudiumsmodule" No later than one week before the start of the semester!

Module booking tool UZH

Important Informationen

Other modules Early booking is recommended so that you receive email information from the instructors and can access course materials on OLAT.
Block courses Important: do not miss the two-week booking window, which takes place at the end of July/beginning of August and at the end of December/beginning of January.

Biology block courses at UZH and ETH Zurich are booked via a dedicated tool

Biology block courses ETHZ Closing date for registration is the end of the second week of the lecture period.

Further information

If you wish to attend courses at ETH Zurich, you must register at ETHZ as a specialized (non-degree) student. Registration is valid for one semester and is free of charge. You will then receive login credentials for the ETH system and can enroll in courses and register for examinations. The registration deadline is the end of the second week of the lecture period. Students who have reserved biology block courses via the joint UZH/ETHZ system must also register at ETH Zurich. Further information can be found here.

UZH Block courses for ETHZ students

Students from ETH Zurich who wish to take biology modules at the University of Zurich must apply for cross-institutional study no later than the Friday before the start of the semester. For students from other Swiss higher education institutions, an earlier deadline applies (31 July for the Autumn Semester, 31 January for the Spring Semester)

Forschungspraktika / Research Internships Research Internships cannot be booked.

Internal Research Internships have to be agreed by a Research leader as well as by the module leader of the specific Research Internship.

Modules in the Advanced Studies ("Fachstudium")
Courses from the third year of the ETH Zurich Bachelor’s degree programme in Biology may also be credited towards the specialized study phase, with block courses counting as WP 2 and concept courses as WP 3. Please consult the ETHZ course catalogue (links are listed below under ETHZ courses WP 2 and WP 3) for a current list and contact the Biology Study Coordination Office at UZH if in doubt. Very important information on block courses UZH

General information

The block courses consist of research-based teaching and learning in small groups. The complex organization and delivery of these courses require special rules which, due to the limited number of places, must be observed by all students in the interest of fairness.

Application for block courses

Timely online registration is required for block courses in the subject-specific phase. The exact registration deadlines are published below.

The registration period for block courses begins in mid-July for the Autumn Semester and in mid-December for the Spring Semester, and lasts two weeks in each case. One week before the start of the semester, the final allocation can be viewed in the block course booking tool.

However, block courses do not appear as “booked” in the UZH app; they are only entered once the grade has been recorded.

Block course application and allocation for fall semester 2026:

Application deadline: 20 July–7 August 2026 (provisional)block course application

The final allocation is available from 0x.0x.202x  block course allocation

Cancelation of  block courses Assigned courses must be attended. You should therefore carefully consider which courses you register for. If, for compelling reasons (e.g. illness), you need to withdraw from a course to which you have been assigned, you must immediately notify the module coordinator directly. Otherwise, or if you withdraw for other reasons, the course will be considered failed.
Compulsory attendance For the biology block courses of the University, continuous attendance and active participation are mandatory. Absences are not permitted for any reason.
Block course assignment A prerequisite for attending block courses is the completion of the basic studies (all compulsory modules passed). In addition, some courses require specific prerequisites, which are listed in the course catalogue (e.g. certain foundation modules or concurrent subject-specific lectures). Please check before registering whether you meet the prerequisites. It is your responsibility to select only courses for which you fulfill the requirements.
Allocation criteria Priority is generally given to master’s students with the course included in their confirmed Learning Agreement, followed by bachelor’s students who have not yet completed the required number of block courses for the bachelor’s degree. There is no entitlement to be allocated a block course. Students who are expected to complete their foundation studies through repeat or January examinations before the course begins will, if possible, also be allocated. However, students who have already completed the compulsory modules at the time of registration have priority, and the grade point average of all compulsory modules is taken into account in the allocation. To increase the chances of securing a block course place, you should indicate as many options as possible during registration (all courses you would be willing to take). If too few options are provided, the likelihood of not receiving the desired number of places is high.
